Ft. of Retail Space in Live Oak Shopping Center on Florida Blvd. in Baton Rouge, La. 01.26.2008// The Louisiana High School Athletic School Associations's executive committee voted to start a process that will lead to construction of a new LHSAA office and Hall of Fame building in the Baton Rouge area. The executive committee met before Friday's general business session and approved the move, based on a 17- page study submitted by the new Commissioner Kenny Henderson and LHSAA business manager Allison LeBlanc. Discussion about whether to renovate the current office, located at 8075 Jefferson Hwy., or to buy land and build a new complex began at a business-finance committee meeting Tuesday, the day before the convention began. The committee was not required to go to the general assembly of principals for approval of the planned purchases-sale. " When I look at the building we have now, I can see it being renovated into something fantastic," Henderson said. " You can't always look at these things with your heart. I'd like to see us move into a facility that will last this organization 20 years. We could have a Hall of Fame there along with a multi-purpose room we could use for classes, meetings, and hearings." The 17 - page report detailed the need for maintenance or renovation to the existing property, a converted antebellum-style home purchased in 2000 for $1.2 million. At the time of its purchase, the current facility was twice the size of the previous LHSAA offices located off off Jefferson on Wrenwood. Ineffective office space, a lack of space and parking for meetings-classes and the need to update wiring and other structural improvements were among the reasons cited for a new facility. A lack of space forces the LHSAA to store items at other sites and to rent sites to hold meetings and classes. Henderson told the committee a new facility with space and meeting areas would provide a significant savings. A comparison of the three options presented showed staying at current location with limited upgrades would cost $995,000, while doing major upgrades to the current office would cost $1,606,500. In turn, new construction on a new 8,000- to 10,000- square foot facility was listed as $815,600. Costs to obtain property were not included in estimates. The committee charged Henderson, LeBlanc and assistant commissioner B.J. Guzzardo to lead the project. No timetable for completion of the project was set. Doug Ferris of ASA Commercial Real Estate has been contracted to handle the sale of the current property and to help acquire a south Baton Rouge site for a new complex. Henry Building (s) Approval of the new building project came less than 24 hours after Henderson announced the current building would be named in honor of recently retired Commissioner Tommy Henry. Henry was honored with a plaque, which will hang outside the LHSAA building, at his retirement banquet Thursday. LeBlanc said when the LHSAA moves to its new facilities, those facilities will also bear Henry's name and include plaque. The tribute to Henry, who spent 24 years as LHSAA commissioner, lasted more than four hours. He received other gifts, plaques and was presented with proclamation from his hometown of Alexandria, making Jan. 24 Tommy Henry Day. Officers, dates, etc. Marlin Ramsey of South Beauregard was re-elected as the LHSAA president for 2008. South Terrebonne's Ken Delcambre was elected as the vice president. Delcambre replaces Raymond Cassimere of Northwest, whose term has expired. Dates for the 2008 State Farm Prep Classic football championships and the 2009 LHSAA Convention were also announced. The Prep Classic will be Dec. 12-13 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
